But we use system 2 for any difficult or extended tasks that require a lot of brain power. System 2 is lazy, so prefers to adopt System 1 conclusions if it means it doesn’t have to work. It is effortful, deliberate, structured thinking. It is gullible and always seeking to make things true, so if System 2 is pre-occupied, we can be fooled into believing things that aren’t true. System 1 is constantly forming a view of the world around it and looking for any subtle changes. It’s what we may think of when we hear the word ‘intuition’. The book refers to the interactions between what he terms ‘system 1’ and ‘system 2’ thinking. Daniel Kahneman even won a Nobel Prize in 2002 for his work. I can’t wait to go on this adventure with her.” As for Carina Adly MacKenzie, she is a story queen and a brainiac who is very funny and mind-blowingly thoughtful. “Though I had met her before, and though I adored The Originals and Legacies and Roswell, New Mexico, when we had drinks she was so wonderfully, amazingly astute about storytelling, she understood the themes in my books so well, and she was such an incredible powerhouse of business acumen and nutball levels of intelligence, I knew I would be insanely lucky to have her take charge of as many of my novels as she wanted. “One day in early 2020, Julie Plec and I drank white wine and ate taco chips together in a Mexican restaurant,” said Lockhart. Being able to adapt it for television is a career highlight for me - not to mention how thrilled I am to bring the lovely, intimate, emotional journey that is Again Again to life with Carina and the Emilys (Lockhart and Cummins).” It’s mysterious, romantic and devastating - and Family of Liars showed me just how sprawling and multi-generational the series can be. “It’s one of the best YA novels I’ve ever read, and I’ve read a lot. “I’ve chased We Were Liars for years,” Plec said. Green Lantern: Rage of the Red LanternsĬollects Green Lantern #26-28, #36-38 And Final Crisis: Rage Of The Red Lanterns #1. They served as a prelude to Blackest Night and here is the reading order: If you don’t want to read everything, maybe just the last storylines before the start of the crossover. Hal Jordan and the Corps are front and center during this event and the antagonist is connected to the mythology of the lanterns. The easiest answer would be all of Geoff Johns’s Green Lantern up to that point, of course. As the war between the different colored Lantern Corps rages on, the prophecy of the Blackest Night descends and it’s up to Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps to lead DC’s greatest champions in a battle to save the Universe from an army of undead Black Lanterns made up of fallen Green Lanterns and DC’s deceased heroes and villains.” The combined might of the Green Lantern Corps and an armada of living superbeings must now band together in a fight quite literally for their lives. Here is the official synopsis: “The Prophecy of the Blackest Night has come to pass-a mysterious force is raising deceased heroes and villains into an army of undead Black Lanterns! It was the culmination of a lot of ideas developed by Johns during his celebrated run on Green Lantern. Coming from the creative team of Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis, Blackest Night was the massive DC Comics crossover event of 2009-10. Outlaw is about Jake Knight who is a spoiled bored rich kid living in an English boarding school. Who is the enemy here? There are few firm lines in this story. It's fast-paced, plausible, packed with technology including unmanned surveillance apparatus and a remarkable beetle. It looks like our main characters may die at the end, but the author manages to inject humor at the most suspenseful time. This story has its moments of humor and suspense. He is known as the Chameleon, because of his talent for changing disguises quickly. Sor is a cross between Robin Hood and a terrorist, if terrorists were armed with only a slingshot. That turns out not to be so cut-and-dry, but they two of them do end up in the company of this outlaw, Tubuuku Sor. The first suspect in the kidnapping is a young terrorist outlaw, well known to the government. Jake and his sister waste no time being kidnapped. The author actually lives in this part of the world, with his family, as a missionary. So, this is pretty topical, including terrorist extremist groups and government corruption. So, Jake gets kicked out of boarding school and joins his family in Burkina Faso, West Africa, where his father is an ambassador. I have added it to my top-20-of-all-time bookshelf, which still doesn't have 20 books on it. I don't think it or its author is well-known - YET. This novel kept me up very late because I couldn't put it down. Finally, he describes what we now can say about the historical Judas himself as well as his relationship with Jesus, suggesting that one needs to read between the lines of the early Gospels to see exactly what Judas did & why he did it. More important, Ehrman gives a complete and clear account of what the book teaches and he shows how it relates to other Gospel texts-both those inside the New Testament & those outside of it, most notably, the Gnostic texts of early Christianity. Now, a leading historian of the early church, Bart Ehrman, offers a comprehensive account of the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, revealing what this legendary lost gospel contains and why it's so important for our understanding of Christianity.Įhrman, a featured commentator in the National Geographic special, describes how he first saw the Gospel of Judas-surprisingly, in a small room above a pizza parlor in a Swiss town near Lake Geneva-and he recounts the fascinating story of where and how this ancient papyrus document was discovered, how it moved around among antiquities dealers in Egypt, the USA, & Switzerland, and how it came to be restored & translated. The recent National Geographic special on the Gospel of Judas was a major media event, introducing to millions of viewers one of the most important biblical discoveries of modern times. If you have ANY triggers at all, this may not be the story for you It is a dark romance that contains graphic violence, dub/non con, and deals with subject matters such as child trafficking and human sacrifice. Trigger Warning: This book ends on a cliffhanger. That all being said, I’d like to take a moment to point out the triggers of this book: A subject I’ve written about in this blog. Trigger/content warnings are incredibly important for both the author and the reader. It’s another thing entirely to enter a situation blind. I made an educated decision to read something I knew had the potential to make me uncomfortable. By that, I mean, I was aware of what was I getting into with a book like this where there are very clear trigger warnings. I would like to clarify that there is a difference between unsuspecting and deliberately marketed content. I know, in the past, I’ve written some pretty strongly worded reviews about dubcon etc. Haunting Adeline is the first in the Cat and Mouse Duet, and the first book I have read from this author! "This study's comprehensiveness and the author's bone-dry wit make this compelling reading, not just for folklorists, but for anyone interested in a time when the dead wouldn't stay dead."- Booklist "Barber's inquiry into vampires, fact and fiction, is a gem in the literature of debunking. From the tale of a sixteenth-century shoemaker from Breslau whose ghost terrorized everyone in the city, to the testimony of a doctor who presided over the exhumation and dissection of a graveyard full of Serbian vampires, his book is fascinating reading. In this engrossing book, Paul Barber surveys centuries of folklore about vampires and offers the first scientific explanation for the origins of the vampire legends. Write it because you can’t imagine writing anything else’.” He told me, ‘Kid, whatever you write next, write it with all your heart. Remembering her last conversation with him in an interview, she said, “I was nearing the end of a series of books I’d begun writing in 2008 and was feeling depleted and ready – creatively – for something new and different.
